A Few Reasons to Consider Trying Goat Milk

You may have noticed that goat milk has been getting an increasing amount of supermarket shelf space in recent times. Once relegated to speciality and health stores, viewed primarily as a niche product, goat milk is now experiencing a renaissance. This is partly due to increased consumer awareness and people generally becoming more concerned about health issues.

Many people think of goat milk as an alternative to cow milk and therefore a replacement, but there’s actually no reason why it needs to be. They are two completely different products and if you want to consume both, there shouldn’t be any problem with that.

Here are a few good reasons to consider adding goat milk to your shopping list.

1. Goat milk is easier to digest

Contrary to popular belief, there’s not actually much difference in the lactose amounts between cow and goat milk, but unless you’re lactose-intolerant, there’s no problem with consuming lactose. In fact, human milk contains nearly twice as much lactose as cow milk.

The main differences are in the types of protein and fat that the different types of milk contain, and most importantly, that the protein and fat content of goat milk is closer in molecular structure to human milk than cow milk is. This makes it more digestible, easier to metabolise, and less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions for most people. The increased speed of digestion releases more good bacteria and enzymes in the body, better enabling you to absorb and utilise the nutrients without discomfort, stomach ache, or a variety of other typical milk allergy symptoms.

2. It has lots of health benefits

With a high mineral and vitamin content, goat milk has many other health benefits, and replaces many of the supplements which people consume daily. It includes vitamin B5, which is needed for the release of energy from food, and biotin, a B-vitamin which is important for a healthy nervous system.

Like other milks, it’s also a rich source of calcium, which is essential for the development and maintenance of bones and teeth, helps protect against the onset of osteoporosis, and lowers blood pressure.

3. It doesn’t have to be homogenised

Ever heard someone talk about cream rising to the top of milk and wondered why you haven’t seen your milk from the shop do that? That’s because it’s undergone a process at the factory called “homogenisation” which basically forces the cream to blend with the milk and not float to the top.

Since the fat particles in goat’s milk are different than those in cow’s milk, they automatically stay blended with the rest of the milk– no factory intervention required. This results in a milk that most people think is creamier than cow’s milk. Which leads us to our final point…

4. It’s delicious!

With its creamy, thick texture, and rich, sweet taste, goat milk is delicious on its own. But you can also enjoy it in places where you’d typically use other milk, like on cereal or in other recipes.
