Superior tasting free range and barn raised poultry

At The Tasmanian Food Co, we know that not all chickens are created equally. Nichols Poultry have been perfecting their birds for more than thirty years in the clean and pure natural Tasmanian environment, using locally-sourced feed and ingredients.

Established in the early 1980s when founder Rob Nichols and his family emigrated from Leicestershire in England to Sassafras in Tasmania, Nichols Poultry has grown to become one of the most trusted and respected meat brands in Tasmania. Consumers trust Nichols as a source of high quality chicken because of the way their birds are raised and how they’re prepared for the table.

All Nichols birds are treated with respect and enjoy an ethically-approved lifestyle. RSPCA standards have been adopted for barn-raised poultry, and for free-range chickens, Nichols Poultry go beyond the recommended regulations of the Humane Choice standard, including allowing the chickens to roam for 24-hours a day rather than the recommended minimum of eight hours.

The birds are also raised in environmentally-responsible surrounds with a low carbon footprint; Nichols use a wind turbine to produce 50% of their own power and source all their feed locally to reduce food miles and support local farmers and communities.

When the birds are processed, the meat is air chilled to cool rather than spin chilled in chlorinated water, like most other chickens. Spin chilling bleaches the meat and adds water that emerges during the cooking process and influences the flavour, whereas air chilled chicken is brighter in colour, yields up to 8% more meat and results in a much more flavoursome bird.

Nichols has three categories of chickens to choose from:

  • Nichols Poultry – RSPCA-approved original cuts and whole birds
  • Nichols Kitchen – pre-seasoned, ready-to-cook products such as Chicken Bocconcini and Chicken Cheesy Tenders
  • Nichols Ethical Free Range – a new free range chicken grown to ethical standards that are well above the industry norm and involve a strong commitment to animal welfare and responsibility for the environment.

Taste the difference of Nichols Poultry from The Tasmanian Food Co and enjoy quality chicken at its natural best.

"It's blown me away. Small volumes of birds with 24 hours access to range. If I was a chicken in Tasmania, I'd want to be on a Nichols farm."

Rob Caldecott, 2016 UK Poultry Farmer of the Year on Nichols Ethical Free Range.

"Meander Valley Dairy clotted cream is top notch & would be an authentic complement back in Cornwall or Devon to the perfect cream tea. Please try it if you've never tasted clotted cream with strawberries, on trifle, with ice cream, on scones with homemade preserves, or with any favourite sweet treat."

Virginia Beers, on Facebook about our Meander Valley Dairy Clotted Cream.

"Wow, purchased your Nichols Ethical Free Range chicken today in our local IGA grocery at Cygnet. Super impressed, got home and watched your video. Increasingly, I have been challenged with how the meat our family eat is treated and your product have made me feel good about the purchase and will definitely buy again. Thanks for taking these steps. I appreciate as a business it can be a leap of faith, you are doing an amazing thing! So a big thank you from the Little family."

"Dear Meander Valley,Just a quick email to say that you have made two Devonian girls in Perth WA very happy with your clotted cream! We have tried scones on numerous occasions and they just aren't the same without the right cream... We found your product after being told about it by a friend and are now sat enjoying scones with proper cream!  Thank you again."
